Joachimsthal, 2025
Single-channel 3D animation, 4:59

Joachimsthal, a modest but historically resonant village in the Czech republic, serves as a nexus of extractive histories and geological inquiry. The installation interrogates the human essence embedded within extraction, now obscured by the encroachment of automation. Accompanying the miners’ journey, the spectral voice of Johannes Malthesius preaches from his seminal 16th-century text, ‘Sarepta, die Bergpostille’. This work, lauded for framing mining as a divinely sanctioned practice, consecrates the miner’s labor as sacred, situating it within an expansive theological cosmos, central in a transcendent narrative of sacrifice and salvation.
